A Woman’s letter to her Legislator

My Fellow American:
I am an American citizen concerned for her country – no, actually frightened. I awake each morning with anxiety, wondering what latest horror the day will bring. I can only imagine what immigrants are feeling – especially Hispanics and Muslims.
As a white senior, I have less to fear (except for the attacks on Social Security and Medicare). Nonetheless I was outraged that Trump signed a greatly expanded global gag order two days after millions of women marched in opposition to his agenda – a retaliatory stick in the eye to us and devastating to the millions of women, mostly poor, who will be left without healthcare. Interestingly, many men will also be affected because of the restrictions on HIV/AIDS programs. People will die because of blind adherence to ideology. (There’s nothing we women love more than seeing a bunch of men signing off on women’s rights!)
Next, vital government agencies’ communications are shut down and monitored, with “special” threats to the EPA. This is NOT NORMAL. These agencies provide vital information to the public and are funded by taxpayer dollars. They are not part of a fiefdom controlled by the White House. Scientists are now planning a march in response to this imposition of executive power. No wonder the book “1984” is now Amazon’s top-seller. As Trump obsesses about his inauguration numbers, “voter fraud”, and the efficacy of torture, we wonder if we now live in a world of “alternative facts” and diplomacy by tweets.
The ban on Muslim immigration is the latest revulsion in this perversion of American values. Far from making us safer, it will do the opposite. Cooperation by the Muslim community will cease as fear spreads: ISIS propaganda will gain more recruits. As for the Wall, I don’t want my taxpayer dollars going for this absurdity. Let Trump pay for it out of his “billions” that we cannot verify, as he won’t release his tax returns (a first!).
Political novice (with impulse control issues), he is now blowing up relations with one of our biggest trading partners and closest neighbors. The “voter fraud” issue is another delusion. No one believes that millions of undocumented immigrants voted. Trump’s own attorneys dismissed claims of voter fraud during Jill Stein’s recount request, saying: “All available evidence suggests that the 2016 general election wasnot tainted by fraud or mistake.” Consistency doesn’t seem to be a strong suit!
What is frightening is the fact that these false accusations are believed by millions of supporters and serve to undermine faith in the government – as does this constant attack on the media. All of this undermines our democracy and must be strongly rebutted.
It also provides impetus to those state governments controlled by (let’s be honest) Republicans who use this phony issue as a way to put more restrictive voting laws in place.
Any person with a functioning brain can see through this ruse. Which brings me to Jeff Sessions, a man who has shown support for claims of voter fraud and who said the Voting Rights Act is an “intrusion”. Please do not confirm him as AG. If your party wants us to believe that you truly support democratic values, you would push back against this insidious corruption. We see the destructiveness of one-party rule in the state of North Carolina, now rated on a par with Cuba by the Electoral Integrity Project.
Finally, I ask that you to vote NO against these outrageous Cabinet nominees. Apparently corporate America wants to save on campaign contributions by installing its own representatives. The current nominees are opponents of the very departments they would
head. I am enclosing a sheet with a list of the very worst.
If you are not familiar with the study by Professors Gilens and Page, please read it. It provides a clear answer to the reason so many angry, frustrated, and clueless Americans gave the middle finger to the political establishment. In an extensive study of the difference between what most Americans want and what their legislators do, they found that the priorities of the top 10% made it into law, while wishes of the bottom 90% were ignored. We can now see this happening with the ACA, Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid. According to the Economist’s Democracy Index 2016, the US has been downgraded from a “full democracy” to a “flawed democracy” because of a further erosion of trust in government and elected officials.
As President Carter said about Citizens United: “It violates the essence of what made America a great country…Now it’s just an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery…” Ben Franklin warned us we have a republic “if you can keep it”. We have not kept it.
Your loyalty is to the American people as our representatives and NOT to the candidate who despicably mocked your colleague John McCain’s service and POW experience. The great Republican president Teddy Roosevelt said: “To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
A patriotic American,
